Driving around the countryside in Eastern Ontario in the past few years, I became fascinated by the old barns. Once I started looking, I realized that there are hundreds, each with a story to tell. Some stories are sad. I have seen barns disintegrate and fall down over the years, but others keep their usefulness even when the paint starts to peel and the roof rusts. I am not as interested in the modern barns, They lack the romance of the old ones, although I am sure that the farmers who put them up find the barns' watertightness and upgraded features much more practical. At first I thought of the barns as background to the roadside wild flowers I wanted to paint, but the barns are now taking pride of place.
